SOUNDING ATMOSPHERES :: Aurality and the Aesthetics of Atmosphere

As part of a broader philosophical enquiry of atmospheric aesthetics and phenomenology, Sounding Atmospheres pays particular attention to sound, as a means of exploring the processes of atmospheric production and perception. Through lecture-workshops, group discussion, and practical experimentation, a series of questions will be examined, including: what does it mean to ‘sense’ an atmosphere?; what role does sound (and the embodied act of listening) play in atmospheric generation?; how might an investigation of sound and aurality allow for a deeper understanding of how atmospheres are staged (produced), sensed (perceived), and shaped (performed)? Such questions will be explored in a number of contexts and through a range of vectors, including: speech and voice; architectural ambience; designed sound; music; radio plays; theatrical performance; and silence.

Terzo appuntamento del ciclo SEMINARI PUBBLICI, incontri dedicati a un approfondimento, in forma di dialogo, con ricercatori, filosofi, teorici, artisti e musicisti che presentano la loro ricerca e discutono tematiche rilevanti legate all’esperienza sonora. Questo terzo appuntamento si svolgerà nell’arco di due giornate, prevedendo sia una parte laboratoriale (workshop, con posti limitati) sia un momento teorico e di discussione pubblica (tavola rotonda, aperta a tutti anche a chi non ha partecipato al workshop).

GEORGE HOME-COOK è un ricercatore inglese e autore del libro THEATRE AND AURAL ATTENTION, STRETCHING OURSELVES, punto di partenza per una riflessione laboratoriale e teorica relativa alla creazione di ‘atmosfere’ in ambito teatrale, performativo.
Il testo investiga infatti che cosa significhi assistere a una performance teatrale attraverso l’ascolto; concentrando l’indagine sulle quattro dimensioni sonore di una performance – rumore, sound design, silenzio e immersione – Home-Cook mostra come l’ascolto teatrale consista nel prestare attenzione alle ‘atmosfere’. L’ascolto di uno spettacolo non risulta dunque nel decifrare i dialoghi degli attori in scena, ma si tratta piuttosto di un processo attivo, dinamico, intersensoriale, intersoggettivo e in continua relazione con ciò che è invisibile.

ABOUT GEORGE HOME-COOK

Dr George Home Cook is a performance practitioner-researcher and freelance lecturer, based in the UK. His research in theatre phenomenology, theatre sound and the aesthetics of atmosphere has received international recognition and has been translated into French and German. George has taught theatre studies, performance philosophy and the study of sound at a variety of academic institutions, including: the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, the Royal Academy of Music, Queen Mary, University of London, Buckinghamshire New University and the University of Surrey. George is the author of the critically-acclaimed monograph, Theatre and Aural Attention (Palgrave Macmillan), which was nominated for the Joe A. Callaway Prize for Best Book on Theatre and Drama 2014-2015.
