JAKO MARON è il “guaritore e alieno sonoro” venuto dall’isola de La Reunion per cui “tradizione” non può che far rima con “sperimentazione”. Supportato da sintetizzatori modulari, drum machine e crackle box, Maron riprende e trasforma i ritmi Maloya e Séga, la musica tradizionale degli schiavi che fu bandita dall’isola negli anni ’60, disossandoli in beat elettronici minimali, e proiettandoli nel futuro con nuovi contenuti sociali. Sono le linee di synth ipnotiche e oscure, i ritmi lenti dalle influenze hip hop, Elektro e Dub, e dunque non la sempice fusione con la tradizione, che rendono il suo stile ibrido così innovativo e raffinato. JAKO MARON is the ‘Sound alien and healer’ from the island of Reunion who makes tradition rhyme with experimentation. He uses modular synthesis, drum machines and a crackle box to reinvent and mutate Maloya and Séga, the two folk genres on Reunion whose origins trace back to African slave communities. Banned until the 1960s due to its strong political engagement, the artist reimagines the folk music of his homeland in stripped-down electronic beats, and propels it straight into the future with a new meaning and social usage. Influenced by old-school hip-hop, electro and dub, he works with slow tempos and a range of hypnotic synthlines to generate binary and ternary rythms that are dark and inscrutable, yet effective and evocative. “But it is exactly that subtleness what makes this fusion so intriguing: rather than emphasizing the novelty of this folkloric-electronic pairing, Maron opts for a subtler, deeper kind of hybrid”. His music is realeased by the adventurous Ugandan label Nyege Nyege.
